Roman numerals name chord function in a key: I is tonic, V is dominant, and so on. Contests, AP-style work, and many directors use that language, not only letter names.

Start with root-position major/minor triads in easy keys. Inversions, sevenths, and secondary dominants wait until the basic map is automatic.

Always fix the key first, then ask: scale degree of the root, quality, and function. Sing or arpeggiate the chord. Connect RN labels to sounds you already know from triad ear training.

• Drill major keys before minor
• Name quality and numeral together (e.g. ii is minor)
• Use progressions (I–IV–V–I) not only isolated chords
• Pair with written RN drills when available
