Practice intervalsWhy intervals matter
Intervals are the distances between pitches. Naming them by ear helps with dictation, sight-reading, and hearing chords in band. Start with fifths, octaves, and major/minor thirds before sevenths and tritones.
Melodic intervals (one note after another) are usually easier than harmonic intervals (notes together). Practice both: hear it, name it, then find the same distance on your instrument.
How to practice well
Short daily reps beat marathon quizzes. Use sing-back or finger the interval on your instrument before you lock an answer. When you miss, replay and hum the distance instead of guessing from a list.
- Start with a small interval set, then expand
- Alternate ascending and descending
- Add harmonic intervals after melodic feel solid
- Pair with written interval drills on the staff
