Practice triadsChord quality is a listening skill
Triads show up constantly in band harmony. Naming major, minor, diminished, and augmented by ear ties the vocabulary to what you hear in rehearsal.
Start with major vs minor only. Add diminished when you can hear the tight, unstable color; save augmented for later if it confuses early practice.
How to practice
Arpeggiate the chord in your head or under your breath. Compare the third and fifth carefully. When you miss, replay and sing root–third–fifth before choosing again.
- Block chords and broken arpeggios both matter
- Connect names to Roman numerals later (I, i, vii°)
- Write triads on the staff in produce mode
- Review weak qualities in Today’s mix
On practice cents
HYKOM triad drills are free. Staff and write modes use the same qualities you learn by ear.
